2017 Museum Events Schedule

Early Life in Grove City, The Townships
January – April 2017

Museum visitors will be encouraged to share personal stories and memories about their life growing up in Grove City or one of the neighboring townships. On display will be a variety of cast iron cookware popular with cooks for over 2,000 years. You’ll learn about the pewter tableware common before porcelain cookware was introduced and view antique dishes and glass. Most early homes of the 19th and 20th Century had a variety of crocks; large ones were used to make pickles; jugs usually held home brew more commonly known as moonshine. The exhibit will include a special PowerPoint presentation.

Experience Several Hands-on Exhibits

  • Crank the handle of a manually operated wood washing machine.
  • Lift an iron used to press cotton clothes heated on a wood stove.
  • Hear musical recordings on an Edison phonograph over 100 years old.
  • Learn about party lines and telephones that required a crank handle
  • View old televisions, radios, and early communication devices.

Wedding Season
May – June 2017

White wedding dresses have been popular since 1840 but how common were they? Engage in conversations about dresses on display, typical wedding gifts, the groom, and the meaning of shotgun weddings. See wedding dresses from other periods and cultures. Visitors will be urged to share any family stories about early wedding and how news about weddings spread through the neighborhood grapevine.

Military Honored During May

May 29 is Memorial Day, a federal holiday to remember those who have fallen in battle for the United States. Learn the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day in a special PowerPoint presentation. Observe a patriotic theme that includes uniforms, flags, private collectables, official Vietnam photographs and much more.

Take a piece of history home. Private collection of 20th Century newspapers and magazines from World War I through Vietnam era will be displayed and visitors can take a piece of history home. Watch for this special date in May.

Festivals from Grove City’s Past
July – August 18, 2017

The Society will take a look in the summer of 2017 at the many varied festivals from Grove City’s and Southwest Franklin County’s past years.

Those interested can follow that process at the Grove City Welcome Center and Museum and also take part by sharing memories and knowledge of those events for future generations.The information shared will be compiled into a booklet that will be made available to the public late 2017 or early 2018.
